Begin Againers – Just enjoy it!

It might feel like starting all over again but I’m a strong believer that your muscles remember.  Your soul remembers the joy, ecstacy and frustration too.  It can be a full body and soul awakening.  Ahh I’m getting carried away again!

You’ve been back to your first class and all those childhood memories come flooding back.  The joy but also the frustration too.  Well I say… let the bad memories go.  You’re back in class for you, not for exams or to be shouted at, not to be told you’re not good enough or that you must wear a certain uniform…no way!  Now you can just enjoy it.  The striving for self improvement can be at your own pace, the emotive music can make your heart sing, there are a group of like minded souls all around you just trying to improve themselves with no need to compete with you.  How refreshing!

OK maybe you used to be rather good and you fear you won’t be half the dancer you used to be.  All I can say is get over it, you’re on a different path now.  Some of us creative types can be rather sensitive about this but you can get so much out of class.  Your body remembers.  Just lower your legs and take time to turn out!  I’ll say that again, TAKE TIME TO TURN OUT!  Even if you’ve warmed up well (oh and please warm up well! I incorporate warm ups at the beginning of my classes but many don’t.) don’t over push your turn out, your knees will hurt if your legs and feet and in fact your whole body needs time to build up enough strength to maintain the positions.  Rolling in or out will hurt you.  Be kind to yourself, it will come and you’ll see a real difference in a few weeks.  Patience is the only way.

Maybe you only went to ballet until you were 8 years old or so, until it got too intense or horse riding turned your head or maybe your teacher was one of the old school dragons who crushed your spirit so you gave up.  Now it’s time to hear the call of the adult ballet class.  It’s fun, you choose how hard you want to work, how much or little you want to be pushed/corrected/encouraged and you know what?  You can leave if you don’t like it and try another class. There are plenty about.

Once you’ve got a couple of classes under your belt you should feel a little more pulled in and up, walking taller and a little achey from new muscles being used.

This is just the beginning of your journey.  Happy Dancing! xxx
